Long & McQuade Musical Instruments was formed in 1956, when Jack Long set up a small store on Carlton Street in Toronto on the second floor of a house.
Long, who has a degree in Music from the University of Toronto, was a professional trumpet player in Toronto, and thought he could sell instruments to some of his friends in the music community. His first official product line was King Band Instruments, which was followed by many others.
The store’s floor was later divided into music studios so that Long could teach trumpet lessons on the side. About 6 months later, he rented out a room to a local drummer named Jack McQuade, who used the space for drum lessons.
In 1957, both Jacks decided to open up a small retail store on Yonge Street and named it Long & McQuade Musical Instruments. The partnership continued until 1965, when McQuade decided to pursue drumming full time and sold his portion of the company to Long.
Long & McQuade began expanding in 1968 and has continued to do so. Currently there are over 100 Long & McQuade stores across Canada, as well as an online store that opened in 2008. The company employs over 1,800 musicians and contracts approximately 1,000 music teachers across Canada.
To this day the entire company is still 100% owned by the Long family. While Jack is still involved as an advisor, his sons Steve and Jeff now run the day-to-day operations

More About Boston Pizza :
A Restaurant, Sports Bar and Patio Boston Pizza is three great concepts under one roof!
Since opening our first location in Edmonton, Alberta in 1964, Boston Pizza has offered guests two experiences under one roof – a family-friendly casual dining restaurant and a separate sports bar with a lively atmosphere. No matter which side you select, Boston Pizza serves up an extensive menu with many items to choose from.
While we’re famous for our gourmet pizzas made with our signature hand pressed dough, our extensive menu satisfies every appetite with our mouth-watering pasta dishes and a wide variety of, salads, entrées and desserts.
The casual atmosphere, combined with big-screen high-definition TVs in the sports bar, makes Boston Pizza as fun for families as it is for teams and groups of all ages. Most of our restaurants also feature an outdoor patio for those days when guests want to sit back and soak up the sun.
Boston Pizza has more locations, serving more guests annually than any other casual dining concept in the country. Each year, more than 40 million guests are served across more than 365 locations in Canada.
BPI is Canada’s number one casual dining brand. The Boston Pizza brand has served communities from coast-to-coast for over 60 years since opening its first restaurant in Edmonton, Alberta in 1964. Today Boston Pizza proudly remains a Canadian company with its hundreds of local franchise owners operating more dining rooms, sports bars and patios than any other single brand in the country, along with take-out and delivery. BPI has been recognized as a Platinum Member of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies for 30 years, is recognized as a Great Place to Work and has been a Franchisees’ Choice Designation winner for eight consecutive years.
We are Chris and Tiffany! We’re a Woodstock couple, set on changing people’s mind about how fun specialty coffee can be!
I (Chris) have always loved coffee. Growing up my parents brewed a pot every morning, so waking up to the smell of coffee is in my blood. I’ve always been interested in the process of growing beans, to roasting beans, to brewing beans. The whole thing is just kind of amazing! So after I brewed, researched, and even worked in a cafe for a bit, I decided I wanted to bring my love for fun and good times to the coffee industry. Thus, Streets Ahead Coffee was birthed. A fun loving , easy going, specialty coffee roasting business.
Tiffany has always been a huge help, from her knowledge of computer graphic design, to website design and just being a whiz kid at all things, I could not run this business without her. She helps pack coffee too 🙂
Together we have built up this crazy thing into what you see today. Full of cool and fun retro designs, we love our coffee and hope you will too!
We bomb around Ontario weekly and almost every weekend we are out and about so if you want to know where we’ll be next, tune into our Instagram.
Thanks for reading!
P.S. If you ever have any questions about coffee or just in general,
(No we don’t know how they get that caramel in the Caramilk bar either!) Shoot us a message, email, carrier pigeon or whatever floats your goat!
The last ten years have been devastating for local news coverage… but it doesn’t have to be that way.
While certain media conglomerates have failed to adapt to a changing environment, resulting in closed newspapers and slashed workforces, we’ve been “doing the opposite”, to borrow a phrase from George Costanza. We’ve worked with local people to launch new publications in towns and cities who have lost their papers, and we’ve invested in quality newspapers whose existence was threatened by lack of a succession plan.
Our keys to success are in simple philosophies, such as “local people telling local stories” and that “news should be free and accessible for all”. From a business standpoint, we believe “advertising rates must make sense for businesses of all sizes”. While these all sound like common sense, these philosophies are indeed “the opposite” of what some of the big media companies are doing.
One big thing that hasn’t changed in this industry is people’s desire for local news. That’s what it is all about: helping to make communities stronger by sharing important news, inspiring people through positive stories, and preserving memories while recording history for all-time.
Simply put, our goal at Grant Haven Media is to restore small-town journalism, one community at a time.
